On Mars in the future, a small police squad is sent by train to collect a violent criminal from a mining settlement. However the mining operation has disturbed the ghosts of the original inhabitants of Mars, who have started killing the humans and turning them into zombies. The basic plot my not be original (see Assault on Precinct 13 and Rio Bravo), but as always with John Carpenter it is done with great style and he builds the tension and drama well. The story is told as flash backs and from the perspective of several of the characters. The plot of the ghosts is well worked into what is essentially an action film, with good performances from Natasha Henstridge and Ice Cube, who are well supported by Jason Stathan and Clea Duvall
